About Laredo, Texas

Laredo was founded in 1755 as Villa de San Agustin de Laredo after a Spanish village and in honor of St. Augustine. One of the oldest crossing points along the U.S.-Mexico border, the city of 236,000 is located on the north bank of the Rio Grande. Laredo’s economy is based on trade with Mexico. Its location on the southern end of I-35 promotes this vital trade role between the two nations. It has four international bridges and a railway bridge. Rich in history, Laredo is also known for its sports teams and celebrations. Its biggest festival is the month-long Washington’s Birthday Celebration, held throughout February. During the month, the city hosts thousands of tourists to the Jalapeño Festival, Border Beer Feta, Stockmen’s Ball, Princess Pocahontas Pageant, air show and high-spirited parades.
