About Ashland, Kentucky

Lakeland is a city of about 100,000 located halfway between Tampa and Orlando. Originally home to Native American tribes, the community was first settled in the 1870s. The arrival of the railroad a decade later rapidly accelerated its growth. Named for the many lakes that surround the city, Lakeland has 38 named lakes and several unnamed. Most of them are actually phosphate mine pits filled with water. Phosphate mining, along with citrus and cattle production, remain important industries there today. The city is also known for its swans, descended from a pair sent at a Lakeland resident’s request by Queen Elizabeth in the 1950s. About 100 of the graceful birds, some of whom are local celebrities, grace the city’s waterways. Lakeland performs an annual swan wellness event, rounding up the birds with boats and nets to give them check-ups and vaccinations, and then releasing them. Lakeland is home to Publix Supermarkets, which is also its largest employer.
