Contrary to popular belief, Joplin was not named after the famous composer Scott Joplin, but after Reverend Harris Joplin — one of the first prominent religious figures in the area. No matter the origin of the name, the city has a cameo in Bobby Troup’s famous song, “Route 66.” Even though Route 66 runs through Joplin and it is the largest city in Jasper County, Joplin nonetheless embodies the spirit of a quaint, small town; it comes complete with a bustling Main street, drive-in theaters, and many family-owned stores. The city hosts a variety of activities throughout the year that draw locals and visitors alike, including the Joplin Memorial Day Run and PhotoSpiva, the longest running photography competition in the nation.
