Beaumont sits on the Neches River about 90 miles from Houston and about 36 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. Home to about 118,000 people, it’s also the site of the Port of Beaumont, the nation’s fourth largest seaport. The city started as a single farm around which a small community grew. The town was eventually named Beaumont after Jefferson Beaumont, brother-in-law of Texas businessman Henry Millard. Oil transformed the area in the early 1900s, turning it into one of the country’s major petro-chemical refining centers. Today, Beaumont is the home of Lamar University, several energy companies, 19 museums, and a host of artistic, cultural and outdoor related activities.
