Colorado Customers Applaud Englewood-based Exede Satellite Internet Service on 10th Anniversary of First Satellite Launch

July 21, 2014

Englewood, Colo.– July 17, 2014 – A decade can reflect vast leaps in technology, and that’s certainly been the case with satellite internet – an industry with deep roots in Colorado.

This month marks the 10th anniversary of the launch of the Anik F2 satellite, which enabled a new internet service from WildBlue Communications, an Englewood-based startup.

WildBlue was acquired by ViaSat Inc. in 2009. In addition to retaining the organization’s Colorado presence, ViaSat has grown the Englewood workforce to over 400 employees and launched a transformational new satellite internet service in 2012 called Exede(R) Internet – at 12 Mbps, eight times faster than the original service.

Many of those first generation WildBlue customers have remained loyal and are Exede high-speed internet subscribers today.

Gerald Toeneboehn lives in Guffey, a Park County ranching community with an official population of 98. He and his family use the internet for personal communication and shopping, taking advantage of Exede’s Late Night Free Zone for streaming movies. After upgrading to Exede service, Toeneboehn said: “I noticed a big difference right off the bat. Download speeds got so much better.”

Others who opt for a rural lifestyle no longer have to sacrifice connectivity. Theresa Saldivia, who lives on the eastern plains, was among the first WildBlue subscribers and now uses Exede Internet to stay in touch with a large family all over the United States. “Living in a rural area, great internet service is important. I am a very happy customer of Exede.”

Even for Colorado’s snowbirds — the Pickell family’s case, reverse snowbirds — internet has surpassed their expectations in two locations: the family’s Breckenridge residence and their second home in Florida.

“We’ve transferred our service twice now,” said Michael Pickell. “It normalizes our costs and provides consistency of service in both locations. It’s a testament to the WildBlue and Exede customer service people, who are able to go the extra mile to figure out what it takes to hold a good customer. The treatment we’ve received has been just extraordinary.”

Over the past 10 years, the Englewood team, which is now the satellite services division of ViaSat Inc., has pushed the limits of satellite technology to surpass customer expectations. The team, which includes some of the original WildBlue staff, has:

  • Expanded its services to include home telephone service, a residential plan with unlimited access to email and web pages, and a new business service;
  • Led all other internet service providers, including DSL, cable and fiber, in delivering advertised download and upload speeds for two consecutive years;
  • Grown its subscriber base to more than 640,000 subscribers across the U.S. (as of 4/4/14)

Today, ViaSat also offers Exede In the Air high-speed in-flight Internet for airline passengers on JetBlue and another major carrier; Exede Business for added speed and data tailored to business subscribers; and Exede Enterprise communications for live events, field operations and disaster response. The company has also announced plans for another groundbreaking satellite, ViaSat-2, scheduled to launch in mid-2016. Its launch is expected to facilitate a significant expansion of Exede services, capacity, speed, and coverage areas.
