Thermopolis’ name is taken from a Greek word meaning “hot city,” and in this town’s case, it’s an accurate description. The town of 3,000 is home to the world’s largest hot spring and numerous other natural hot springs. These mineral-laden waters form Hot Springs State Park, which is open to the public for free. The town is also home to the Wyoming Dinosaur Center. Located near Wind River Canyon and the convergence of two rivers, the picturesque town is ringed by mountains. Tourism is big business here, with people flocking to soak in the hot springs, play on water slides and raft, among other attractions. Its biggest annual event is the 3 Hot Spot Shootout Basketball Tournament, held every May, during which several city blocks are closed and converted into 60-plus temporary basketball courts.
