About Shreveport, Louisiana

Shreveport is Louisiana’s third largest city. The Red River is its heart and soul, and since riverboat gambling arrived in the 1990s,it has also served as its cultural center. The riverboat casinos helped revitalize the nearby downtown and waterfront areas, so Shreveport now boasts restaurants, shops and nightclubs featuring zydeco and blues music along its river. It also has a long and colorful history. Founded in 1836 by the Shreve Town Company, the corporation was established to help develop the new town at the juncture of the Red River and Texas trail. During the Civil War, Shreveport was the capital of Louisiana. Sportsman flock to Shreveport for fishing, swimming and boating at recreational areas that include Cypress Black Bayou, Caddo Lake and the Red River National Wildlife Refuge. All that combined with its mild winter climate and hot summers means Shreveport has a lot to offer to visitors and residents alike.
