With just roughly 400 residents, Asher is a closely knit community with about 160 homes. It’s a short drive from the much larger communities of Ada and Shawnee, Oklahoma. Asher is named for George Asher, who in 1892 purchased land in what was then the Oklahoma Territory to build his farm home. Asher supplied land for the town with the condition it be named after him. Ironically, he never lived there. Cotton was the main industry in Asher until oil was discovered in 1927, fueling Asher’s biggest boom. Banks, barber shops, hotels, a theater, jewelry and drug stores all were built to support those who flocked there for oil, and the town prospered. Asher’s population dwindled when the oil boom ended and a state highway was diverted around the town. Asher still boasts an independent pre-K to 12 school district, and has a well-earned reputation for winning baseball teams. With farming as an enduring economic influence, it also has active 4-H and FFA chapters.
