About Chatfield & Navarro County, Texas

Chatfield is an unincorporated community in Navarro County. Established as a trading post in 1838, its population peaked at about 500 people in the 1890s. It’s located in Navarro County, and about 14 miles from the county seat of Corsicana. Corsicana, with about 24,000 residents, is the heart of Navarro County and home to more than half of its residents. Founded in 1848, it owes much of its development to the discovery of Texas’ first commercially significant oilfield in 1894. Subsequent discoveries in the 1920s and 1950s infused new life into the city. Corsicana boasts a thriving performing arts community, beautifully preserved historic buildings, meandering creeks, trails, tennis courts, a busy YMCA, college, museums, planetarium and exposition center. It’s most well known for a bakery that has been producing the oft-maligned fruitcake since 1896. But Corsicana has a diverse economy that includes manufacturers of everything from chocolate to iron.
