At about 3,300 people, Grand Saline is the third largest community in Van Zandt County. It’s about 75 miles from Dallas and 35 miles from Tyler. The town is named for a nearby salt mine owned by Morton Salt. It’s thought to be the second largest in the world, and estimates say the salt dome will last another 20,000 years. Salt is what drew the first settlers there; Native Americans traded it for other goods. Today, agriculture is also a major economic driver. Rolling hills, creeks, streams and a river make Grand Saline a scenic place to either visit or live.
