Data Allowance Policy Q & A

What is the Exede Data Allowance Policy?

All our Exede Internet plans come with our fastest speeds (either 12 Mbps or 5 Mbps depending on your area). The only difference between the plans is the amount of data you can use every month, which is your data allowance. The Data Allowance Policy is the official document that explains how the whole thing works.

How is my data usage measured?

We measure your data usage on a monthly basis and reset it to zero on your monthly billing date, when a new measurement period begins. Starting on the first day of your monthly measurement period, all uploaded and downloaded data transmitted using your Exede service counts toward your data allowance.

What happens if I exceed my data allowance?

If at any time your total data usage exceeds the data allowance, we may severely slow, restrict, and/or suspend your service, or certain uses of your service, until the end of your monthly measurement period. At the end of each monthly measurement period, your data usage resets to zero. If your service has been restricted due to excessive use, it will be restored.

How do I keep track of how much data I’m using?

We encourage you to monitor your usage. Customers who receive their Exede bill directly from us may review their current data usage online by doing the following:

  1. Go to: Exede/WildBlue Bandwidth Usage.
  2. Login with your primary wildblue.net email address and password. Enter your whole email address, including the “@wildblue.net” part. Note: If you do not have a wildblue.net email address, you will need to set one up. For assistance, please contact Exede Customer Care at 1-888-278-6858.
  3. For additional information on monitoring your usage, please read our knowledge base articles about data usage.

Note: If you receive your monthly bill from a service provider other than ViaSat, please check with your service provider for instructions on how to check your usage totals.

What are my Data Allowance Policy usage thresholds?

If your monthly bill is… $49.99/mo. $79.99/mo. $129.99/mo.
Then your monthly Data Allowance is… 10 GB 15 GB 25 GB

Please note:

  • Your download and upload data usage is combined.
  • If you are a Recovery Act Program subscriber, your data allowance shall be as stated in the Recovery Act Addendum to your Customer Agreement.

How can I get a higher data allowance?

  • If you currently have the 10 GB or 15 GB, consider upgrading to a higher service plan which provides a larger monthly data allowance.
  • If you occasionally need more data in a single month, take advantage of our Buy More feature. Buy More gives you the flexibility to purchase more data in 1 GB increments for $9.99 per GB. Get more details about Buy More here.

What is the Late Night Free Zone and how does it apply to the DAP?

The Late Night Free Zone allows you to download and upload between 12 midnight – 5 a.m., local time, every night without usage counting against your data allowance. Learn more here.

If I run out of data allowance and have my speeds slowed, will they stay slow during the Late Night Free Zone?

No, your speeds will return to normal during the Late Night Free Zone, even if you have no data allowance remaining during your billing cycle. Get the full story on Late Night Free Zone.

What activities may cause me to exceed my data allowance?

Some activities use more data than others. Here are some examples:

  1. Full-length movie downloads
  2. Unsecured wireless router
  3. Heavy use of peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs
  4. Continuous downloading or viewing streaming media content such as; online video and radio
  5. Extended use of web cameras
  6. Extensive downloading of large applications or files
  7. Extensive uploading of home movies, photos, and/or large email attachments
  8. Extensive use of online backup services such as Carbonite, Mozy, SOS and HP Upline.

If you use your Exede service for these activites, you should monitor your usage to make sure you don’t exceed your data allowance.

For discussion about these situations, please visit our online forum at WildBlue World.

What if I receive my service through another provider?

See the chart below to review the policy directly from your Exede Service Provider (the company from which you receive your monthly service bill). Please note that these policies may be called the “Fair Access Policy” rather than the “Data Allowance Policy.” Regardless of the name of the policy or service provider, the way we measure data usage and the restrictions imposed for exceeding your monthly data allowance are all the same.
